Sustainability
The Whale is built on a deep respect for nature and an unwavering commitment to creating a positive impact on both the environment and society. By sharing knowledge, insights and information on the issues shaping our collective future — and the future of our oceans — we strive to inspire awareness about the importance of protecting the oceans. Moreover, we are working a create a culture of engagement and responsible attitudes among our suppliers, partners, stakeholders and guests.
We support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with a particular focus on ocean conservation. The Whale works actively to achieve Goal 14, Life Below Water, while also contributing to other sustainability goals. Our ambitions, objectives and measures are outlined in our sustainability strategy.
We take our role in society seriously and continuously work to minimise our environmental footprint, strengthen local value creation and maintain high ethical standards in pursuit of our sustainability goals. Below, we outline how we actively embrace our social responsibility and contribute to achieving positive environmental, social and economic development.
OUR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
The Whale aims to create the most meaningful encounters between people and whales. Through engaging and immersive experiences, we inspire visitors to protect our oceans and help safeguard a healthy future for whales. We strive to deepen understanding of the vital connection between humans and nature, with particular emphasis on children and young people. By sharing the latest research on whales and marine ecosystems, we contribute to making this knowledge accessible and relevant to everyone.
The Whale will be an important cultural arena for the local community. By hosting exhibitions, concerts and a wide range of events, we will enrich local cultural life and contribute to raising the quality of life in the region. The centre will serve as a vibrant meeting place where residents and visitors alike can connect, engage in meaningful dialogue and participate in inspiring experiences.
The Whale creates positive ripple effects for Andøy and the surrounding region, which contributes to the development of sustainable, year-round tourism. The attraction generates employment both directly and indirectly, while strengthening local value creation for accommodation, dining, transport, retail and activity providers. We support long-term, sustainable destination development by taking part in local and regional projects and networks.
