From Vision to Reality: Construction of The Whale On Track for June 2027 Opening

In 2019, an iconic image of The Whale captured international headlines. Created by the Bergen-based visualization studio Mir, the rendering brought Danish architecture firm Dorte Mandrup’s bold vision to life. Today, that widely celebrated architectural landmark is rapidly taking physical shape on the rugged coast of Andøya, Northern Norway.

Following a summer of high activity at the construction site, the project has entered a major new phase. Contractors HENT and Staticus are currently installing the massive, curved glass façade facing the open ocean. Building a landmark at the very edge of the Atlantic Ocean—utilizing custom-engineered solutions—presents complex structural challenges, but key milestones are continuously being met. The turf roof is fully installed, and the structure is taking definitive shape inside and out.

"Stepping inside the building now gives you an almost cathedral-like feeling. The spatial design and panoramic view towards the ocean are truly unique," says Construction Project Manager Roger Pettersen, confirming that the project remains strictly on schedule following a demanding Arctic winter.

The location in Andenes was chosen specifically for its unique marine proximity. Just offshore lies the Bleik Canyon, a deep submarine trench along the continental shelf known for its rich marine ecosystems and reliable year-round whale presence.

Step by step, the vision of a international hub for marine knowledge, culture, and nature-based experiences is becoming a reality. The Whale looks forward to welcoming its first visitors on June 4, 2027.
