The Whale to open on 4 June 2027

The Whale, a new knowledge and experience centre dedicated to whales and the marine environment, will open its doors in Andenes, Northern Norway, on June 4 2027.

Located on the Arctic island of Andøya, more than 300 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, The Whale will bring together marine research, education, art and storytelling in a new visitor experience exploring the world of whales and the oceans they inhabit.

Andenes is renowned for its exceptional whale-watching opportunities. Just offshore lies the deep underwater Bleik Canyon, a rich feeding ground that attracts sperm whales throughout the year, as well as a variety of other whale species. This unique proximity to the whales is central to The Whale’s identity and visitor experience.

The centre’s architecture is designed by Danish architecture firm Dorte Mandrup. Rising gently from the rocky coastline, the building features a sweeping, curved roof covered in natural stone, creating a distinctive landmark with panoramic views of the Norwegian Sea and the surrounding Arctic landscape. During the summer, visitors will experience the midnight sun, while winter offers the possibility of the Northern Lights.

Inside, the visitor experience has been developed in collaboration with Ralph Appelbaum Associates and Tamschick Media + Space. Exhibitions will explore whale biology, behaviour and evolution, while also examining the complex historical and cultural relationship between humans and whales. 

A mission to inspire care for whales and the ocean

The Whale’s mission is to deepen our understanding of whales and the marine environment, inspire curiosity and foster a stronger connection between humans and whales. Through a combination of science, art and storytelling, The Whale aims to create an experience that encourages visitors to see marine life from new perspectives and consider humanity’s relationship with the ocean.

At the heart of The Whale is a vision of a future where greater knowledge, wonder and connection inspire people to care for marine life and the ocean. While the challenges facing marine ecosystems are significant, The Whale seeks to be a place of hope and celebration—one where visitors of all ages can experience the beauty and importance of marine life in an engaging and uplifting way.

Designed for children, families, students and travellers, The Whale will offer an immersive journey that combines knowledge with moments of wonder and reflection. The experience will invite visitors to explore the lives of whales while considering the wider ecosystems they depend on and humanity’s role in protecting them. The Whale is a collaborative project financed by both public and private stakeholders. The centre will welcome visitors from June 4, 2027, with tickets scheduled to go on sale in September 2026.
