The Whale began as an idea in 2014. Construction work began in June 2025, and the project is now moving steadily towards its planned opening in June 2027. Along the way, the project has been shaped by key decisions, collaborations, and milestones.

The Whale Workshop and Whale ’n’ Ale
As Pre-Project Phase 2 began, local businesses were invited to a workshop to share ideas for how the future Whale building could also be used — both permanently and temporarily. Later that evening, the community gathered for “Whale ’n’ Ale”, a celebration to thank everyone who had supported the project and helped make 22 March an unforgettable day.
Steering Group Study Trip to Denmark
The Whale’s steering group travelled to Denmark for a study visit to leading museums and visitor centres. The program included the Natural History Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen, Moesgaard Museum in Aarhus and the Wadden Sea Centre in West Jutland.
Andenes Whale Symposium
Leading whale researchers from Norway, the UK, Madeira, the Azores and Canada gathered in Andenes for a scientific workshop. The symposium explored how The Whale could become an international arena for research and communication about the ocean, marine mammals, climate and sustainability.
Elliot Meets the Whale Researchers
During the symposium, six-year-old whale enthusiast Elliot had the opportunity to meet the visiting scientists. Together they went on a whale safari outside Andøy, listening to whale sounds and discussing life in the ocean.
The Whale AS Established
A major milestone was reached when Andøy Municipal Council approved the municipality’s purchase of shares in The Whale AS. The municipality joined local partners including Adolfsen Group, Andenesfisk, Eidissen Consult, Andøy Reiseliv SA, Hvalsafari AS and Sea Safari AS as owners of the company.
Completion of Pre-Project Phase 2
Regional politicians, tourism representatives and partners gathered in Sortland to mark the completion of Pre-Project Phase 2 and celebrate the start of the next phase. During the event it was also revealed that The Whale will be built in Sløyken, near the lighthouse at Andenes.
Whale ’n’ Wine Evening
Residents of Andøy were invited to a special evening event where the team shared updates on the project and the work ahead. The program included knowledge about whales, cultural performances and a seafood buffet celebrating the region’s ocean heritage.
Study trip to Lofoten
The board and project administration of The Whale AS visit Lofoten on a study trip hosted by Museum Nord. The programme includes presentations about the SKREI project and visits to Galleri Espolin, the Lofoten Museum, the Lofoten Aquarium and Lofotr Viking Museum, ending with a traditional blot ceremony. The trip provides inspiration and strengthens cooperation between the institutions.
World-Class Design Team Visits Andenes
The Whale welcomed the internationally renowned exhibition design firm Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA). The team visited Andenes to begin developing ideas for the future exhibition and visitor experience that will form the core of The Whale.
Community Workshop with RAA
Residents of Andøy and the wider region were invited to a workshop to share ideas for the future attraction. Participants also met the team from Ralph Appelbaum Associates and explored the lighthouse area through a creative and unconventional workshop experience.
